Awesome news: I'm writing a kids' book!

Hola, Reader

I'm very excited to announce that my friend JD and I are creating a children's book called The Ick Brick Story. This book is targeted at ages 7 to 9, and we are raising $5,000 on Kickstarter to cover publishing and printing costs.

The Ick Brick Story is about a community called Shapesville living peacefully together and caring for one another when one day, the villain, Ick, shows up and convinces the community he can make their lives better if they start accumulating "Ick Bricks." These Ick Bricks ooze a gross yellow slime onto everything, killing flora and fauna. This doesn't go well for the community either. They lose almost everything in pursuit of Ick Bricks and stop trusting one another.

Meanwhile, Ick seems to keep accumulating more and more. The community is suffering at Ick's expense. The protagonist shape children become concerned about what's happening to their community and convince them to organize and confront Ick. Instead of facing accountability, he blasts off to Mars in his Ick Brick Tower-turned-rocket. Though the community is left with nothing, they are grateful for the children who helped them remove this Ick sickness, and they all begin rebuilding together.

I would greatly appreciate if you would consider pledging to our Kickstarter. We are 24% of the way to our fundraising goal already!

Upcoming Talk

I am again joining my friend and humanist colleague Kato Mukasa on his show Humanist TV Africa (formerly called "Call to Activism: Africa") this Friday, December 15, at 6 PM GMT / 1 PM ET / 12 PM CT / 10 AM PT.

In this episode, Kato and I will discuss white supremacy culture and its connection to what's happening in Palestine.

This will be my third time on this show; however, it will be the first time since the tragic passing of the show's co-host, Lynda Tilley. Kato has published a lovely tribute to Lynda called Angry Musings From Africa: Lynda Tilley - The Unsung Hero Of African Humanism.

Guatemala City

Phil and I plan to stay here until February 7. We are enjoying the time with friends and improving our Spanish.

Oh yeah, side note: I wear glasses again. I was an elementary school student the last time I wore prescription glasses.

Christmas & New Year in Guatemala City means fireworks! Often! This includes a fireworks holiday on December 11, invented by the most popular fast-food fried chicken chain in Guatemala City: Pollo Campero.

It turns out our apartment had a primo view of this fireworks show, so we had Ana and Alejandro, Ana's mom, and Ana's mom's partner over to watch. Pollo Campero must have had a good year because there were fireworks and drones!

Wishing you and the ones you care about a gentle holiday season.

I'll catch you in the new year.

Thanks for following along with me,

Hi, Reader I've been struggling to sleep at night because my Gazan friend is in trouble. As you know, Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians. The situation in Northern Gaza is particularly bleak, and there is little hope for a positive change in the situation anytime soon. Haneen Qanetta is a friend of mine. She is 24 years old and lives in northern Gaza with her parents and six siblings. Before the war, Haneen was in nursing school. This is Haneen The Qanetta family lost...

Hi, Reader We arrived in Bangkok on September 26th. The flight from Los Angeles to Xiamen, China, was about 15 hours, and the flight from Xiamen to Bangkok was about 3 hours. All told, it was probably 24 hours door to door. But we made it, and we love it here so far! Bangkok from our balcony in the neighborhood Thong Lo This is my second time in Asia. I lived with and worked for my Uncle in Hong Kong for a few months in 2011. This is Phil's first time in Asia. Both of us are enjoying Bangkok...

Hi, Reader I’m writing to you from Pasadena, and boy have I been busy in the last eight weeks. Me and Zappa, Marit’s new three-legged dog in Pasadena I meant to get around to sending an email last month, but between all the moving around, the wedding, getting COVID, resigning from the AEU, and some personal drama with friendships, it just didn’t happen. But now I’m back with big updates! Catsitting in Chico, CA Phil and I spent a week in June watching our friend Dan’s cat Scooter while he and...
